Creature Café: Jumping Spiders

October 28 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Tiny hunters. Incredible eyesight. Elaborate dances. Entire personalities packed into a creature small enough to sit on your fingertip.

Join Rooted Futures Collective for Creature Café: Jumping Spiders, an up-close introduction to some of the most charismatic predators in the garden. Participants will explore the fascinating world of jumping spiders, including how they hunt, communicate, see their surroundings, choose mates, and navigate habitats very different from our own.

Unlike web-building spiders that wait for prey to come to them, jumping spiders are active visual hunters. Their remarkable eyes allow them to track movement, judge distance, recognize potential prey and rivals, and perform surprisingly elaborate courtship displays. We’ll take a closer look at these adaptations while learning about the jumping spiders found in North Texas and the important role spiders play in healthy ecosystems.

Participants will also have opportunities to look for jumping spiders and other small wildlife, photograph observations, and contribute discoveries to iNaturalist. No previous identification or community-science experience is necessary. Rooted Futures volunteers and iNaturalist Ambassadors will be available to help participants photograph, upload, and identify what they find.

The goal is simple: slow down, look closely, and discover just how much is happening in the tiny worlds around us.

Volunteer & Community Science Hours

Volunteers are welcome to assist with event setup, participant engagement, wildlife searching and observation, photography, iNaturalist documentation, and cleanup. iNaturalist Ambassadors are especially encouraged to participate and help newcomers learn how to make useful biodiversity observations.

Participation may qualify for volunteer, community-service, outreach, environmental-education, or community-science hours through participating schools, organizations, and volunteer programs. Anyone who needs hours documented, verified, or entered into a specific volunteer system can email jess@rootedfuturescollective.org with the program name and reporting requirements.

Participants are encouraged to bring a phone or camera for close-up photography and come ready to look at the garden from a much smaller point of view.

Free and family-friendly. All ages and experience levels are welcome.
