Join us September 18–28 for the Balch Springs Biodiversity Blitz, a citywide community science event taking place as part of iNaturalist’s iNat Together 2026!

Throughout the campaign window, we’re inviting residents, families, students, nature lovers, and curious neighbors to help document the incredible variety of life found across Balch Springs.

You can participate anywhere within the city: your neighborhood, backyard, local park, school grounds, garden, walking route, drainage corridor, or favorite patch of green space. Simply photograph the plants, insects and other arthropods, birds, fungi, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and other organisms you encounter and upload your observations to iNaturalist.

No expertise is required. You do not need to know what you found before uploading it. Clear observations are valuable, and the iNaturalist community can help with identification.

As part of the citywide bioblitz, Rooted Futures will also host several opportunities for people to explore and observe together.

🌙 Night Shift: iNat After Dark

Join us after dark for a special Night Shift biodiversity event focused on the wildlife that emerges when the sun goes down. We’ll use light-based observation methods and good old-fashioned looking around to document moths, other nocturnal arthropods, and whatever else decides to make an appearance.

Additional community meetups may be announced during the iNat Together window.

Observations collected through this project will also contribute to the Balch Springs Biodiversity Atlas, an ongoing community science initiative documenting local biodiversity and helping us better understand the species that share our community.

Bring a smartphone or camera, curiosity, and a willingness to look a little more closely at the living world around you.
