SUMMARY:Night Shift: Beats Beneath the Moth Light
DESCRIPTION:Trade the usual Friday-night crowd for moths\, music\, and a few delightfully strange creatures of the dark.\n \nJoin Rooted Futures Collective for a laid-back night of live beats\, blacklights\, and biodiversity. SUMMARY:Balch Springs Biodiversity Blitz
DESCRIPTION:Join us September 18–28 for the Balch Springs Biodiversity Blitz\, a citywide community science event taking place as part of iNaturalist’s iNat Together 2026! \nThroughout the campaign window\, we’re inviting residents\, families\, students\, nature lovers\, and curious neighbors to help document the incredible variety of life found across Balch Springs. \nYou can participate anywhere within the city: your neighborhood\, backyard\, local park\, school grounds\, garden\, walking route\, drainage corridor\, or favorite patch of green space. Simply photograph the plants\, insects and other arthropods\, birds\, fungi\, reptiles\, amphibians\, mammals\, and other organisms you encounter and upload your observations to iNaturalist. \nNo expertise is required. You do not need to know what you found before uploading it. Clear observations are valuable\, and the iNaturalist community can help with identification. \nAs part of the citywide bioblitz\, Rooted Futures will also host several opportunities for people to explore and observe together. \n🌙 Night Shift: iNat After Dark\nFriday\, September 25\, 2026\n7:30-10:00 PM\n12450 Elam Rd.\, Balch Springs\, TX \nJoin us after dark for a special Night Shift biodiversity event focused on the wildlife that emerges when the sun goes down. We’ll use light-based observation methods and good old-fashioned looking around to document moths\, other nocturnal arthropods\, and whatever else decides to make an appearance. \nAdditional community meetups may be announced during the iNat Together window. \nObservations collected through this project will also contribute to the Balch Springs Biodiversity Atlas\, an ongoing community science initiative documenting local biodiversity and helping us better understand the species that share our community. \nBring a smartphone or camera\, curiosity\, and a willingness to look a little more closely at the living world around you. \nHosted by Rooted Futures Collective as part of iNat Together 2026.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Night Shift: Things That Flutter in the Dark
DESCRIPTION:NIGHT SHIFT UPDATE: TONIGHT’S EVENT CANCELED \n(because\, let’s be real\, Mother Nature is the ultimate party pooper) \n\n\n\nThose strong winds\, cooler temps\, and rain showers are like the ultimate buzzkill for our moth friends\, so we’re calling it a night.\n\n\n\nBUT FEAR NOT\, dear nocturnal enthusiasts! We’re bringing the Night Shift shenanigans to the Balch Springs Trunk or Treat on Oct 30 from 6-10 PM! \n\n\n\nCome hang out with us at the Rooted Futures station for some spooky-ooky fun and learn about the creatures that come out to play when the sun goes down!\n\n\n\nThanks for understanding\, and we can’t wait to get this moth party started again soon! \n\n———————————————————————————————————————————————— \nAs darkness settles in\, the familiar daytime landscape gives way to an entirely different community of wildlife. \nJoin Rooted Futures Collective for Night Shift: Things That Flutter in the Dark\, a creepy-season evening of moths\, insects\, spiders\, and other creatures that become active after sunset. Using UV lights and moth sheets\, we’ll take a closer look at the animals drawn out by the night and explore the strange adaptations\, behaviors\, and ecological relationships that allow them to thrive after dark. \nParticipants are encouraged to photograph what they find and add observations to iNaturalist\, helping document local biodiversity and contribute to our growing community-science record of the species that call Balch Springs home. No science background or previous iNaturalist experience is needed. We’ll help newcomers get started\, and experienced community scientists are always welcome. \nExpect moths\, beetles\, lacewings\, spiders\, and plenty of other nighttime surprises. We’ll talk about why these animals matter\, what draws them to light\, how they fit into local food webs\, and why many of the creatures humans have decided are “creepy” are actually essential parts of healthy ecosystems. \nVolunteer & Community Science Hours \nVolunteers are welcome to help with event setup\, welcoming participants\, wildlife observation\, photography\, iNaturalist documentation\, and cleanup. iNaturalist Ambassadors are especially encouraged to join us and help participants learn how to photograph\, upload\, and identify observations. \nParticipation may also qualify for volunteer\, community-service\, outreach\, environmental-education\, or community-science hours through participating organizations or programs. Anyone who needs their hours documented\, verified\, or logged with a particular volunteer program\, school\, or organization can email jess@rootedfuturescollective.org with the program name and any reporting requirements. \nBring a phone or camera if you’d like to document observations\, dress for the weather\, and come prepared to discover what starts moving when the rest of the city goes to sleep. \nFree and family-friendly. All ages and experience levels are welcome.

SUMMARY:Creature Café: Jumping Spiders
DESCRIPTION:Tiny hunters. Incredible eyesight. Elaborate dances. Entire personalities packed into a creature small enough to sit on your fingertip.\nJoin Rooted Futures Collective for Creature Café: Jumping Spiders\, an up-close introduction to some of the most charismatic predators in the garden. Participants will explore the fascinating world of jumping spiders\, including how they hunt\, communicate\, see their surroundings\, choose mates\, and navigate habitats very different from our own. \nUnlike web-building spiders that wait for prey to come to them\, jumping spiders are active visual hunters. Their remarkable eyes allow them to track movement\, judge distance\, recognize potential prey and rivals\, and perform surprisingly elaborate courtship displays. We’ll take a closer look at these adaptations while learning about the jumping spiders found in North Texas and the important role spiders play in healthy ecosystems. \nParticipants will also have opportunities to look for jumping spiders and other small wildlife\, photograph observations\, and contribute discoveries to iNaturalist. No previous identification or community-science experience is necessary. Rooted Futures volunteers and iNaturalist Ambassadors will be available to help participants photograph\, upload\, and identify what they find. \nThe goal is simple: slow down\, look closely\, and discover just how much is happening in the tiny worlds around us. \nVolunteer & Community Science Hours\nVolunteers are welcome to assist with event setup\, participant engagement\, wildlife searching and observation\, photography\, iNaturalist documentation\, and cleanup. iNaturalist Ambassadors are especially encouraged to participate and help newcomers learn how to make useful biodiversity observations. \nParticipation may qualify for volunteer\, community-service\, outreach\, environmental-education\, or community-science hours through participating schools\, organizations\, and volunteer programs. Anyone who needs hours documented\, verified\, or entered into a specific volunteer system can email jess@rootedfuturescollective.org with the program name and reporting requirements. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring a phone or camera for close-up photography and come ready to look at the garden from a much smaller point of view. \nFree and family-friendly. All ages and experience levels are welcome.
